Ignoring media

By defining itself as a set of practices and not functions [1], the academia is ignoring the need and the opportunity to implement its core function—custodianship of memes (their creation, selection, and transferral to the next generation)—in the new technology. The powerful new media are now under control of commercial actors, which are often contrary to academic spirit and purpose [2].
